M.D. Corbit, LLC

Margaret Corbit is an expert in the development of K-16 educational programs using Internet technologies, in particular the medium of online multiuser virtual worlds. Since 1992 she has developed interpretive and educational content using new media for science and technology research. Corbit directed the online outreach program, SciCentr, at Cornell University for more than ten years. At Cornell, she coordinated the activities of undergraduate developers and program staff, primarily for computational and computer science outreach, and taught related courses. Her projects range from bioinformatics to astrophysics and the social sciences. Today, she continues to pioneer the use of new media for education, including work on development of irtual world museum programs, SciFair science communications fairs, playful Web information spaces, and related projects.

Activities

  • Virtual Worlds in Education (VieW)
    VieW programs focus on nurturing the adoption of the medium of virtual worlds for cross generational and cross institutional project-based learning in virtual worlds in New York State.
  • Virtual Hall of Science
    The New York Hall of Science has been awarded an NSF ITEST grant to integrate the SciFair Model into the Museum's Science Career Ladder Explainers program.
  • NASA Virtual Exploration Sustainability Challenge
    VESC is a Modeling and Simulation (MODSIM) Challenge sponsored by NASA and the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA).
  • DaVinci and Phoenix Worlds
    Students at the Virginia Beach Rennaissance Academy are learning to express themselves through the medium of virtual worlds. This project is a partnership of Virginia Beach City School District and the NIA.
